This Aerospace Systems Engineering course runs in 2016/17.

The Airbus A380, the Boeing Dreamliner and the Eurofighter Typhoon each had key mechanical and electrical systems designed and developed in the UK. This course is designed to provide you with the skills required to join the teams of engineers designing and developing systems for the next generation of aircraft.

WHY CHOOSE THIS COURSE?

The aerospace industry provides one of the most challenging environments for the development and testing of new technologies. This course aims to develop a broad range of systems engineering skills and is taught with a focus on developing problem-solving skills.

You will learn to apply your knowledge to various aspects of aerospace systems. The course aims to give you skills in designing aircraft components. Projects are based upon the systems utilised in the latest military, civil, helicopter and space vehicles. We have invested in aerospace facilities to ensure this course provides excellent facilities for you to learn on actual aircraft products.

If you choose this course you will benefit from:

  • accreditation from the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS), meeting in part the academic requirements for Chartered Engineer (CEng) registration, and the requirements for an Incorporated Engineer (IEng) registration in full;
  • the opportunity to work on a flight simulation equipment suite;
  • teaching staff with industrial and research experience in a variety of disciplines such as aerodynamics, flight dynamics and avionics and experience of working for Bombardier, Rolls Royce, BAE Systems and the MOD;
  • strong international links. For example, one of our major international partners is the Emirates Aviation University located in Dubai;
  • collaborative links with many universities around the world.

Accreditations shall be renewed in accordance with the accreditors’ standard review process
and subject to the University maintaining the same high standards of course delivery.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

Your first year builds on your established skills to provide a foundation of key engineering subjects. You will get an introduction to aerospace topics including aerodynamics, power plants, aircraft systems and structures.

In the second year your aerospace design knowledge is increased using simulation techniques. You will study landing gear design, avionics, flight dynamics, fuel systems and flight control systems.

Your final year includes propulsion systems design, supersonic aerodynamics, an individual project and group design work. In the group work, students compete as part of a team to produce a demanding system design. Previous group projects include the design of an aircraft landing system and the design and construction of a Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV).

HOW WILL THIS COURSE BE TAUGHT?

Your course will be based on a series of lectures, with associated seminars and practical workshop classes. In addition, your personal tutor will review and discuss your progress with you and will be available for advice.

You will work with staff on real-world problems from industry, commerce and research groups, as you would in professional practice; this means that you develop all of the professional skills at the same time as you learn the technical content of your degree.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

An estimated percentage breakdown of how your final grade is assessed is as follows: formal examinations 30%; coursework, tests, essays 25%; practical or project work 25%; group work etc. 15%; presentations, posters etc., other e.g. placements etc. 5%.

TEACHING CONTACT HOURS

In a typical week you will have up to 20 contact hours of teaching and this will break down as:

Personal tutorial/small group teaching: 5 hours of tutorials each week

Medium group teaching: 5 hours of practical classes, workshops or seminars each week

Large group teaching: 10 hours of lectures each week

Personal study: 20 hours each week studying and revising in your own time
