Biol-106 Principles Of Biology Ii

I. Course Description:

 

The course is divided into 2 parts:

 

Part 1: Animals: structure and function.

  • Part 1 of the course is primarily concerned with the organization and functions of the human body.
  • The various organ systems that compose the human body are described and the correlation between structure and function, a major theme of the course, is highlighted.
  • A further theme is the way the various organ systems work together in order to maintain homeostasis.
  • Although the primary focus, the course is not confined to a study of the human body.
  • Various animal groups and selected protists are also described.
  • This comparative format is taken to highlight how different animal groups have evolved in diverse ways in order to solve common problems.

Part 2: Plants: structure and function.

  • This part of the course deals with plant structure and function.
  • Beginning with structural descriptions, the course goes on to cover various plant processes.
  • As always, the correlation of structure with function is highlighted; comparisons are also made with the animal kingdom.

 

II. Course Objective:

  • To provide a basic introduction to the organization and function of plants and animals.
  • At the end of the course, the student should have a clear understanding of basic concepts and principles pertaining to this section of biology.
  • Laboratory sessions will complement the material covered in class.
  • Students who enroll in BIOL-106 must enroll also in a lab section.

III. Course outline:

  • Week 1: An introduction to animal structure and function.
  • Week 2 & 3: The digestive system and animal nutrition. The circulatory system.
  • Week 4: The respiratory system. The immune system
  • Week 5: The excretory system. Midterm exam I
  • Week 6 & 7: The nervous system.
  • Week 8: The endocrine system
  • Week 9 & 10: The reproductive system. Animal development. Midterm exam II
  • Week 11 & 12: Plants structure and function.
  • Week 12 & 14: Plants structure and growth. Transport in plants. Plant nutrition
  • Week 15 Review week and Final exam

Saint Louis University is a Jesuit, Catholic university ranked among the top research institutions in the nation. The University fosters the intellectual and character development of 11,000 students on campuses in St. Louis and Madrid, Spain. Founded in 1818, it is the oldest university west of the Mississippi and the second oldest Jesuit university in the United States. Through teaching, research, health care and community service, Saint Louis University is the place where knowledge touches lives.

The St. Louis campus has been the site of the central administration since 1888, when the Jesuits moved the University from its original downtown campus. Thirteen colleges and schools make up the University campus as well as the Health Sciences Center.

The Madrid campus was established in 1969. The first freestanding campus operated by an American University in Europe, this campus is recognized by Spain's higher education authority as an official foreign university, the first U.S. institution to hold this endorsement.

Saint Louis University, Madrid Campus is designed to fulfill the first two years of undergraduate study in traditional university degree programs. Most of our students finish the last two years of their degrees in the U.S. at our main campus in Missouri (or at another U.S. university in the world).

As such, the Madrid Campus cannot accept transfer students with more than 45 credit hours, with the exception of Spanish and International Business majors, who can now spend all four years in Madrid, and graduate with a bachelor's degree from Saint Louis University.
