Combined Engineering HNC
Along with the introduction to the underpinning engineering principles in both electrical and mechanical engineering, you will develop design skills using industry-standard graphic software. This programme should help you to develop the knowledge and skills that will prepare you to continue your studies at HND and BSc (Hons) Degree levels within Coventry University College should you wish to gain higher level academic qualifications.
Combined Engineering HND
The HND programme is the second year of the Combined Engineering degree course. At this level you will advance your knowledge of electrical/electronic and mechanical engineering and use microcontrollers across a wide range of applications. You will also look at contemporary issues facing tomorrow’s engineers including renewable energy sources.
This programme should help you to develop the knowledge and skills that will help prepare you to continue studies at BSc (Hons) degree level within Coventry University College should you wish to gain a higher level academic qualification.
Combined Engineering BSc (Hons) Degree
The Combined Engineering degree has been designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills required by today’s professional engineers and support individuals looking to develop a career in engineering or undertake post-graduate, specialist study. It will also provide students with the capacity to engage effectively in the application of modern technologies to solve not only today’s problems but also the problems of tomorrow.
As a professional Engineer, you will need knowledge of engineering management. You will get the opportunity to study the field of Mechatronics with specialist investigation into Robotics. A final year project will enable you to select and develop an Engineering topic of interest. The Combined Engineering BSc (Hons) Degree has been designed to provide you with the skills you will need to excel in a modern engineering environment and the capacity to engage effectively in the application of modern technologies.
The BSc (Hons) in Combined Engineering is intended for those who want to develop a career as a professional engineer, but do not want to take a specialist route at undergraduate level.
Honours level study will incorporate the aims listed above and a successful graduate will demonstrate:
a) The ability to critically appraise an engineering scenario with a view to apply new technologies to improve efficiency or effectiveness;
b) How to use an enquiring, critical and reflective approach to engineering studies;
c) Developed practical skills to solve complex workshop based problems;

On successful completion of the programme you should be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:
- The Fundamentals of Engineering – including mathematical skills, mechanical and electrical systems, their importance, and how they function. You will be introduced to the role of Engineering within an organisation to develop an awareness of the requirements of engineering systems. Examining current trends in engineering you will look at design consideration in the modern world and demonstrate practical knowledge within the areas of maintenance and control systems. In the final year you will develop a critical appreciation of different engineering applications in today’s society, developing a practical solution to a problem-based scenario;
- Mechanical systems – you will study the essential knowledge of mechanical engineering science, mechanical engineering design and the operation of mechanical systems, their importance, and how they apply creatively to a variety of routine engineering problems. In the final year you will critically examine thermodynamic cycles and fluid mechanics and creatively apply their knowledge to more advanced subjects such as robotics and mechatronics;
- Electrical/Electronics – you will study the knowledge of the fundamental concepts and physical principles that underpin electrical and electronic engineering and its applications to solving real-world problems. In the final year you will utilise mathematical and practical skills to critically analyse a range of industry based problems;
- Engineering design – identifying design concepts and applying design principles using appropriate software you will explore concepts and theories related to design which provide solutions to a wide variety of engineering problems. In the final year you will critically examine contemporary design solutions;
- Mathematics – you will examine the application of mathematical theory to solve engineering problems is fundamental across the sector. You will also apply mathematical principles to logic controllers and computer programming;
- Project Development – the final year project will involve developing solutions to real world engineering problems. You will critically examine current trends in engineering design, production and management, and apply the principles in a project environment.
This course will be taught through a variety of methods – lectures, tutorials, self-directed learning, textbooks, module webs, scenario-based learning sets, professional libraries and resources, journals and case studies, seminars, discussion forums and peer-to-peer learning.HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?
Assessment will take the form of individual and group coursework, which is vocationally relevant. The wide range of assessment techniques used at Coventry University College will ensure that you have every opportunity to demonstrate your skills and knowledge in full.
There are no traditional final examinations to worry about. Instead, we will assess your learning through course work and phase tests. Assessments take place during and at the end of each six-week block.TEACHING CONTACT HOURS
Full-time: Monday–Friday 9.00–13.00 or 14.00–18.00.
Part-time: Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 18.00 - 22.00."
