Community Drama involves making performance work with a wide range of diverse groups. It can take place in unusual places and spaces. It can also use drama to deal with important social issues.
We have developed a unique and dynamic approach to teaching Community Drama and developing projects to help you succeed in this thriving employment sector.
Placements are vital to the course - we have links with over 50 organisations including youth clubs, health agencies, penal institutions, schools and colleges, mental health organisations, disability groups, and social exclusion projects.
Community drama is a vibrant cultural sector offering many employment opportunities. We have graduates in the fields of arts and regeneration, arts outreach and Theatre in Education. Some are working as arts development officers. Many work on a freelance basis.
Year 1: Fundamental skillsYou develop your immediate acting skills. Using improvisations, you devise original material and discover new approaches to the art of the performer.
You learn about the practical processes involved in running workshops, including how to assess the most suitable format for different groups.
You look at key social, cultural, political, economic and technological developments in the participatory arts over the last 50 years.
You also develop your report writing, research and evaluation skills and choose an elective.
Year 2: Facilitation and applicationYou build on your skills in directing workshops through classroom-based teaching, projects and practical experience in professional community projects.
You develop your ability to plan and manage small-scale projects and, by the end of the year, you should feel comfortable running and evaluating a series of sessions over a number of weeks with a community group.
You take part in a large-scale public performance project, developed and run in conjunction with a specific community group.
You also undertake a group performance workshop with students from other disciplines and can choose a second elective.
Year 3: Independent practiceYou put into practice all the skills you have gained in enabling, devising and managing by producing and realising community-based projects through self-directed activity.
You investigate an area of contemporary practice by organising and presenting a public event.
A final practical project and an in-depth written research project conclude your studies. Alternatively, you can choose to write a substantial dissertation.
You also develop your knowledge about fundraising, project implementation and management to enable you to work effectively as a freelance drama practitioner or set up your own company.
Teaching and AssessmentTeaching is delivered through a combination of tutor supervised placements, practical workshops, workshop projects, seminars and lectures. Continual assessment is used throughout and the methods of assessment include in-class presentations, written assignments, portfolios and project-based performance.
