This Construction Management course runs in 2016/17.

Construction management demands professional input at all stages from concept to detailed design, construction and maintenance. This course will give you the skills necessary to become a highly-trained professional in this discipline.

This Construction Management course will teach you how to blend traditional design skills with modern technologies, whilst helping to give you the skills necessary to become a highly-trained professional in this very demanding but rewarding discipline.

If you choose this course you will benefit from:

  • A course that is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB);
  • being taught by experienced academic staff who are active researchers and consultants in their field, and have professional experience with a high level of design and technical expertise which they include in their teaching;
  • studying with a wide range of other professional disciplines in an integrated department of Civil Engineering, Architecture and Building and which reflects the modern interdisciplinary nature of construction projects;
  • integrated project work where theory is put into practice as soon as it is learned;
  • use of the unique Coventry University Construction Simulation Centre;
  • support from local and national contractors which will enable you to gain involvement with the construction community (including placement opportunities), which can help give you more chance of employment after graduation;
  • a course that achieved an overall satisfaction of 91% in the National Student Survey (NSS) 2014.

The Chartered Institute of Building

Accreditations shall be renewed in accordance with the accreditors standard review process and subject to the University maintaining the same high standards of course delivery.

The core themes of the course include: construction technology, building science and structures, the legal and regulatory framework of building, engineering surveying and construction processes, construction management, contractual procedures, and construction finance.

In the first year you will be introduced to the fundamental topics of building design and the construction process which are essential to practitioners in all of the construction professions. The first year will be taught in common with other building disciplines (Architectural Technology, Building Surveying, Quantity Surveying and Commercial Management) giving you the opportunity to experience and understand the construction team and enable transfer between courses.

Your second and final years will then develop more advanced knowledge of construction technology and management practice, and take you through the finer details, including law, finance and management skills, preparing you for a career in construction management.

Your timetable has a range of learning opportunities, from lectures, seminars and tutorials to laboratories, workshops and studio sessions. You will also be allocated a personal tutor, who will review and discuss your progress with you, and will be available for advice.

You will work with staff on real-world problems from industry, commerce and research groups, as you would in professional practice; this means that you can develop all of the professional skills at the same time as you learn the technical content of your degree.

If you are interested in part-time study (which is taught during the day) please contact the Part-time Admissions team on +44 (0) 24 7765 4321 or email for further information, but please note that not all courses have a part-time option.

An estimated percentage breakdown of how your final grade is assessed is as follows: formal examinations 40%; coursework, tests, essays 20%; practical or project work 20%; group work 10%; presentations, posters etc.10%.

A compulsory Add+vantage module must also be completed: please see the page on the Add+vantage scheme for more details.
