Overview This joint award builds on City's longstanding expertise and significant international reputation in Creative Writing and Publishing. The course can be taken as a one-year full-time or two-year part time taught Masters programme, and shares modules with the MA Creative Writing and the MAs in Publishing and International Publishing.If you have experience of writing or working in publishing (or a related field), and would like to develop your skills further, this course is designed for you. If you are interested in producing your own creative writing, and learning how writers engage with the publishing industry and even work within it, this course will develop the skills you need. Creative Writing and Publishing MA enables you to aspire to a professional role that will match your interests and draw upon all of your talents.This course will appeal to both experienced and aspiring writers who wish to gain the knowledge and skills relevant to professional practice in commercial settings which produce creative content for both print and digital formats. You will be introduced to the rapidly developing world of self-publishing. Temario

Course Content

You will acquire knowledge and understanding through a mix of formal lectures, writing workshops, individual tutorials, group project work, seminar contributions, study visits, work attachments, project work and independent learning and research. Visiting speakers, including guest authors, agents and publishing professionals, are invited regularly to support your learning and module projects and to contextualise other knowledge and skills you'll learn on the programme.

You are encouraged, through a variety of strategies, to reflect on professional practice and professional frameworks during all of your applied work.

Course Structure

You will have the option of studying full-time over one year, or two years part-time. If you choose to study part-time, the first year will focus on modules which develop your understanding of Storytelling and of the practice of Creative Writing in different genres.

Term 1

You will start two core modules, which extend into term two:

  • Storytelling module
  • Creative Writing Workshop.

In your other term one modules you will join the MA Publishers in modules called Creating and Managing Intellectual Property and Digistisation and Publishing.

Term 2

You will choose from modules options:

  • Including a Professional Placement
  • Developing Creative Content module
  • Designing Interactive Media module.

To gain your MA, you will also complete a Major Project, which can focus on either creative writing, a publishing project, or an analytical study of an aspect of professional publishing practice which interests you. While working on your Major Project, you will learn in a supportive environment with feedback and advice from leading writers and industry professionals.

Teaching and Assessment

The Creative Writing Workshop module builds on the format of our successful MAs in Creative Writing by asking you to complete short writing assignments for review by the module leader as well as by your peers.
