Modules

Methods of assessment for course overall: 30% coursework

Year 1
  • Foundations of diagnostic imaging
    This module offers a foundation for students undertaking the diagnostic imaging pathway. It provides a context for the practice of diagnostic imaging and a basic insight into the radiological environment and associated general principles. In addition the module introduces the skills of clinical reasoning and reflection, evaluating information and evidence, and problem solving within the context of the clinical environment. 
  • Radiation sciences for radiography
    This is a foundation module will be working with ionising radiation in a clinical environment. The module commences with a basic concept, atomic structure and then builds on this to explain how X-rays are produced and how radiation interacts with matter. Fundamental to the safe use of ionising radiation are the legislative constraints. These statutory instruments will be explored and students will contribute to the delivery of the module by recalling from their clinical experiences how specific regulations are applied within the work place. This module will also look at beam geometry and its impact on both the diagnostic and therapeutic applications. 
  • Systems 1
    The module is designed to provide knowledge of diagnostic imaging of respiratory, gastrointestinal, lymphatic and urinary systems. Related anatomy, physiology and pathology, together with patient care issues and imaging considerations will be addressed. 
  • Concepts of inter-professional practice in health and social care
    Through consideration of the roles and relationships of professionals with patients or clients in health and social care services, this module will begin to develop in students the skills and capabilities necessary for them to perform effectively in the academic and inter-professional clinical / service environment. 
  • Applied work-based learning
    This module acts as a basis for the development of requisite skills and competence in the practice of routine, conventional diagnostic imaging. It is clinically based at a formally accredited practice placement site. 
Year 2
  • Systems 2
    This module will be working within the clinical environment and is designed to build on Diagnostic Imaging Systems 1, enabling the learner to move on to considering more complex radiographic studies. Related anatomy, physiology and pathology, together with patient care issues and radiographic considerations will be addressed. 
  • Additional modalities
    This module offers a robust introduction to the contemporary specialised imaging modalities currently available in a modern diagnostic imaging department. It also explores the principles of digital imaging and the design of dedicated x-ray units. The module presents considerations associated with the application of these modalities and technologies and their role in contemporary diagnostic imaging. 
  • Pathology related to diagnostic imaging
    Common pathological conditions of the following systems will be explored: alimentary tract, skeletal, respiratory, cardiovascular and urinary systems. The disease processes, effects and symptoms will be investigated in relation to population and age as well as their appearance on appropriate diagnostic imaging media. 
  • Role of enquiry in evidence-based practice
    This module will develop the students understanding of evidence based practice in health and social care, and inter-professional perspectives on research. You will build on the inter-professional working skills gained in Year 1, and apply those skills in the clinical environment. 
  • Applied work based learning 2
    This module provides a framework for the development and evolution of skills and competence developed in Applied Work Based Learning 1. The practice of conventional diagnostic imaging is addressed in relation to the application of modified and specialised techniques, and more advanced procedures. A range of more specialised diagnostic imaging techniques are also addressed. It is clinically based at a formally accredited practice placement site. 
Year 3
  • Diagnostic imaging: specialisms
    This module considers complex imaging issues related to the provision of radiographic services. Imaging will be approached from a multi-modality perspective. The module will provides advanced clinical perspective necessary for you to make an effective and safe contribution in your first clinical appointment. 
  • Health care management
    This module examines the current issues in health care management and delivery. It seeks to address topics which are of importance to practitioners and relevant to practice. It is essential that this module maintains a contemporary focus throughout and therefore the indicative content, within a broad structure, will be governed to some extent by changes in health care policy. The ethical dimension will be addressed throughout. This module will include consent, ethics, dignity, imaging of the older person and children, NAI and the impact of developing technologies. It also addresses advanced clinical reasoning. 
  • Image interpretation
    This module considers complex imaging issues crucial to the newly qualified radiographer. Image interpretation skills appropriate to entry level clinical practice is included. This module will provide you with the advanced clinical perspective necessary for them to make an effective and safe contribution in your clinical appointment. 
  • Application of evidence-based practice
    This module will consolidate understanding and application of evidence based practice in health and social care. You will be expected to evidence inter-professional working skills gained in Years 1 and 2, by utilising those skills both in the workplace, and through learning sets in a process of peer review and support. 
  • Applied work based learning 3
    This module provides a framework for the development and evolution of skills and competence developed in Diagnostic Imaging Work Based Learning 2. The practice of conventional diagnostic imaging is addressed in relation to the application of modified and specialised techniques, and more advanced procedures. A range of more specialised diagnostic imaging techniques are also addressed. It is clinically based and requires access to an accredited practice placement site. 

For the part-time in-service route, the academic and clinical components are delivered over whole week blocks.
