WHAT WILL I LEARN?
Your first year lays the foundation for the study of mathematics, sharing modules with the Mathematics and Physics, and Mathematics and Statistics degrees. You will also develop associated academic and professional skills.
The second year deepens your knowledge of the common mathematical methods core, adding a study of the foundations of mathematics and giving you the opportunity to choose from a selection of topics including graph theory, electromagnetism, and statistical modelling.
The final year continues the above themes and provides a wider choice of option modules. The final year also offers you the opportunity to undertake a substantial dissertation project on a mathematical topic with the support of an individual supervisor.
Your timetable will be based on lectures, computer laboratory sessions and example classes. We schedule weekly sessions where your module lecturers are available to provide support, and on top of group work sessions you will have regular personal tutorials. The Mathematics Support Centre is open seven days a week to provide you with one-to-one support. The Centre also has specialist staff to provide extra support for dyslexic students.
You will work with staff on real-world problems from industry, commerce and research groups, as you would in professional practice; this means that you can develop all of the professional skills at the same time as you learn the technical content of your degree.
HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?
An estimated percentage breakdown of how your final grade is assessed is as follows: formal examinations 47%; coursework, including tests and groupwork 47%; practical work, including presentations 6%.

Each module has a different mix between lectures, tutorials and labs. In a typical week you will have 15-19 contact hours of teaching and this will break down as:
Personal tutorial/small group teaching: 1 hour of personal academic tutorial (or later, individual project supervision) each week
Medium group teaching: 6-12 hours of tutorials, laboratories and studio sessions each week
Large group teaching: 6-12 hours of lectures each week
Personal study: approximately 20 hours each week studying and revising in your own time, including some guided study using handouts, online activities etc.
