    • Communication Lab

The communication lab aims at training students so that they can properly present their projects to the customer and to the market. It is a complex and strategic activity on which the success of a project depends. The lab is divided as follows: organization of a presentation through a storyboard referred to a clear and well-structure graphic project; definition of all tools supporting the story; oral presentation at professional level.

    • Cross-disciplinary Influences

In order to support the language knowledge, cross-disciplinary meetings are organized in collaboration with Master courses of other IED Schools in order to provide students with a complete overview.

    • Design Elements

This intense program helps participants to learn basic programmatic functions through from researches and case study analysis. Use of reclaimed materials. Development of a tridimensional model of an artifact using precise geometric characteristics. Presentation of a precise set of drawing instructions for the adaptability of an abstract tridimensional model to programmatic properties inherent to the design brief. Development of an individual creative process that is capable to elaborate the user and generator, essential in a reflexive system.

    • Design Language

One of the most important objectives of the Master course is the personal research of the expressive language. In history, the most important designers stand out thanks to their works characterized by a univocal and personal expressive code. This lab, together with the projects, encourages the student to search for a very different personal architectural language.

    • Emergent Technologies

It is a lab aimed at teaching new materials limits with reference to the product design and the interior design by paying particular attention to the environmental issues. It deals with knowledge, research and analysis of the sensorial characteristics of materials, surface finishing, emotional feedbacks and chromatic ranges. Moreover, the areas concerning the materials deriving from recycling, the recomposed materials and the ecological production processes are developed in collaboration with specialized agencies.

    • Strategy

One of the strategic assets of the Design School is training designers able to relate themselves to the economical system by interpreting its needs and its values as well as the customer positioning with reference to the market. They must be able to interpret a project brief, to analyze the brand values and to sense the market changes; they need also to interpret the companies seen from outside in order to propose them the right projects and to analyze the market in order to find the fields where companies can introduce their project.

    • Light Technologies

The course covers the basic principles and practice of architectural lighting. The lab aims to approach and deal with the subject of architectural lighting in a practical and comprehensible manner. Since light is one of the subjects rarely dealt during the courses, this lab aims at giving the technical and expressive knowledge concerning light technologies, new technologies of light control and the usage of artificial and natural light. Classes are held in the school’s light lab equipped with the most sophisticated technologies.

    • Methodology

The goal of the course is to guide students throughout the entire process of an interior design project. Applicants will be asked to first analyze behaviors and needs of final consumers without forgetting client’s identity, then focus on interaction between user and infrastructure, reaching spatial layouts with awareness towards colours, materials, finishing, lighting effects, offering a sensorial and emotional experience.

    • Salone del Mobile Language Experience

IED students leaded by Diletta Toniolo will gather information during the Salone del Mobile in Milan as a usefull exercise in deconstruction and reconstruction of the plethora of products, projects and installations exposed during Milan Design Week.

    • Territorial Influences

The course organizes visits to companies of the Italian Design System in order to have a direct experience of products and relevant communication strategies; visits to production sites to observe the production processes; visits to cultural places to stimulate the personal cultural growth; participation to brand or product events to discover communication and market strategies.

    • Self Promotion / Personal Branding

A head to head comparison with expert coaches in personal branding with the goal to provide each participant with the tools to create their own creative portfolio and cv improving their professional online and offline profile.

    • Workshop

Cross-disciplinary workshops addressed to all Master courses of IED Design that take place at the beginning of each Master course edition. The aim of these workshop experiences is to: regenerate the project cultures of the participants, influence the different cultures of the students with the Italian design, as well as develop technical, technological, cultural and “linguistic” topics. Workshops are structured in order to allow students to start outlining their own pathway and include the realization of a theme research.

    • Projects

Projects simulate a real professional situation, where a brief is communicated to students and the development has to provide a project answer by using the learnt expressive tools. The pathway is organized according to classic project structure, i.e. a preliminary research step on the brief, the following analysis and outline, the definition of the concept. In this last step, students are asked to properly use their skills in order to realize an innovative and expressive project.

Additional information

Objective of the course is teaching the design methodology that allows students to get a quality combination of experiences by analyzing the contemporary consumer’s codes of expression and behaviors, the customer’s identity, current trends in design and materials technology. Students learn to develop their own expressive language and to enhancing it with their creativity. They create project layouts particularly accurate in colors, materials, finishes and lighting effects, offering new sensory and emotional experiences.

The main activity of the classes is developing strategic value projects, able to meet the diverse needs of the design industries. Under the guidance of a faculty, consisting mainly of professionals and designers, projects take place according to an open system, in which participants are invited to collaborate with Italian companies of international reputation and new brands looking for an innovative and sustainable design.

The program consists of four weeks of introductory workshops, aiming to examine the knowledge and methods of design students from all over the world, and three Project Laboratories of different length and increasing complexity. The projects simulate a real professional situation: brief, development and presentation.

The Master course includes seminars, visits to leading materials manufacturers and showrooms, participation at events (most notably the Salone del Mobile in Milan), workshops and interdisciplinary laboratories.
Final step the programe is presentation of the Final Project that comprises evidence of the journey taken and the knowledge gained...
