Highway infrastructure is critical to society and one of the most valuable assets a country has. There are over 400,000km of roads in the UK and new developments are continuously being added. Investment in UK roads is set to increase by 20% to nearly £6bn per annum within the next four years, and it’s estimated that a further 12,000 engineers will be needed to deliver these projects. This investment means that highways design and maintenance engineers are in great demand within the UK civil engineering industry.
Even outside of the UK, the need to accommodate rising populations and new commercial areas is resulting in continuous development. Major infrastructure projects and commercial, private and residential developments all require highway engineers to design critical infrastructure to support these new areas. UK standards are rigorous and will give professionals a good grounding in highway design best practice.
Highway engineers plan, design, build, operate and maintain transport and traffic systems and infrastructure for motorists and hauliers. While this covers a wide range of skills, pavement design is a key ability for aspiring highways engineers.
Factors such as traffic growth, aggregate properties, and the existing ground (the subgrade) – amongst others – all contribute to a pavement’s performance and lifespan. Poorly designed pavements are expensive to repair and can impact an engineering company’s credibility. In addition, continuous maintenance of pavements causes congestion, wastes materials, and puts roadworkers at risk.

A tener en cuenta
This training will enable construction professionals to understand the pavement design process and apply the design exercises to their own projects. Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
Appreciate pavement construction methods and materials
Understand how pavement is assessed for maintenance requirements
Develop skills in pavement design for roads and footways to UK standards
Prepare pavement specifications and drawings to UK standards
This course is designed for:
• Graduate civil engineers considering a career within highways in the UK
• Graduate or experienced civil engineers from other countries looking to emigrate to the UK and who want to be familiar with local design standards
• Experienced civil engineers who have worked in other engineering fields who are looking to move into highways
• Experienced highway professionals who want to refresh their knowledge

Civil Engineer with 16 years of experience in highway design
I am a Chartered Civil Engineer with 16 years of experience in highway design, construction and maintenance. My specific area of expertise is in highway maintenance, where I designed and led maintenance projects for Highways England (formerly the Highways Agency) for 11 years. Having worked for paving contractors as well as global engineering consultancies, I have a rounded knowledge of highways. Throughout my career, I have sampled and tested paving materials, helped design a new bypass around Montreal, Canada, and worked on site building a new relief road around Birmingham, UK.
