For more than ten years, Metàfora has successfully run summer courses in Art Therapy and Studio Arts. As a “micro cosmos” of the rest of our courses, these programs offer a unique opportunity for our international students to come and share an exceptional art-experience.
Throughout the rest of the year, Metàfora runs a full-time Studio Arts program and several Art Therapy courses (among them a Postgraduate Diploma and an MA training program). However, of all of our activities the summers is perhaps the most intense and full experience we can offer our students. Condensed and ephemeral, in the midst of sunny summer-Barcelona, Metàfora transforms into an “artoasis” where students and professionals from all over the world share an experience to fill a life-time. The Summers consist of two introductory Art therapy courses:
Our traditional Spanish-speaking “Escuela de Verano” and “the Summer Intensive”, our Englishspeaking Art Therapy-course.

Temario

Every day starts with a presentation where the programme is announced and practical information is shared. The course coordinator recommends cultural activities around the city and comment on the blog of the Summer Intensive and the entries of the previous day.
SEMINARS AND CASE REVIEWS (TAT, CAS)After the presentation there is a daily talk on basic theoretical notions of Art Therapy or clinical casereviews showing a range of applications of Art Therapy to different client-groups. These classes contain a historical timeline of Art Therapy, main theoretical concepts as well as the various forms of Art Therapy, levels of intervention and its applications in clinical and educational settings.
WORKSHOPSMid-mornings are for practical-theoretical classes, dedicated to different client-groups in Art therapy. Here participants play themselves through different exercises, explore the creative potential of the art making process and learn about the many ways of applying Art Therapy in practice.
EXPERIENTIAL GROUP (GAT)One of the most beloved activities each year is the “Experiential Art Therapy Group” (Training groups). This activity is entirely practical and takes place each afternoon. The objective is to offer the participants a practical counter pose to the theory offered in the mornings. The Experiential Group is one of the cornerstones of any training in art therapy. The working methodology is well documented in the literature and aims for the participants to gain notions of group dynamics in which artworks are made. Experiential groups are the closest thing to a therapy group, making them ideal for learning on a pilot basis some of the elements that characterize the profession.
THE LARGE GROUP “TRENCADIS”All participants meet ton the last day in a single group led by a psychotherapist specialized in large format groups. This group meets at the end of the second week and becomes a reference group to all group-work in the Summer Intensive.
THE BLOGThe Summer Intensive has its own blog on the Internet. The blog becomes a “diary” for friends and family to visit, and a “souvenir” for the participants once the Summer Intensive has ended. On the blog we publish small texts and photos from the workshops.
EXHIBITIONSThe workshops throughout the Summer Intensive generate a lot of artistic work. Metàfora has a space reserved especially for showing a selection of the visual results of each workshop. The exhibition space is open only to participants of the Summer Intensive.
