Updating and creating policies which requires a lot of data research and analyzing as well as gathering data from companies and the community. This course helped me tremendously in understanding the dynamics of data and how you can use it effectively for creating great and informative policies, which in turn helped the school with moving forward in becoming one of the top schools for studying and students benefiting from quality education.

  • Data for Effective Policy Making The course aimed at policymaking, but besides that teach critical thinking and data analysis. After I took the course the graph that I show in my class improve a lot, there were richer in information and simple to understand; at the same time I teach how to use the data that we have access to my students, therefore they can support their projects in a more concise way. Besides the classroom, the ability to manage data helped me to show programs results and impact in a new and more efficient way; this makes it easier to get more support for the program.

Sobre el curso: I am an Independent Development Consultant, whose range of interests span an array of subject areas. Additionally, I serve as an Adjunct Lecturer at the University of Belize in the Faculty of Management & Social Sciences (FMSS), specifically in its undergraduate Public Sector Management programme. Independent Development Consulting is my primary occupation. Inevitably, my work opportunities, in this regard, are dependent on whether bids for consultancy projects prove successful. Hence, the course, Data for Effective Policy Making, has improved my work-professional life, via equipping me with salient tools and competencies that have improved my knowledge and appreciation for data and its significance to the need for effectiveness in the policy-making realm. This has led to my heightened awareness of prominent issues and thus increased my capabilities and level of proficiency in such regard. As for the impact of the course on my academic life, being an Adjunct Lecturer whose facilitation of courses include: Public Sector Management, Governance, Public Policy, Public Administration and Socio-Economic Development, I have endeavoured to incorporate the knowledge and information I gained, into my lectures, thus positively expanding the scope of my students’ learning experience. This has also assisted me to stay true to my conviction of always seeking to engender a learning environment that fosters a greater understanding of the need for improved, in-depth analysis. In relation to my social-community life, the course has sharpened my awareness and acumen of just how important data, its accuracy and accessibility is, concerning not only the policy-making element, but more significantly its impact on society and development, across the board.. The result lends to me being more attuned to the variety of dimensions that comprise, define and influence social issues; thus making me a more viable asset to my community. My enrolment and successful completion of the course has yielded positive improvements in the aforementioned areas of my life, both in terms of the conceptualisation and application of competencies pertaining to: Data and Decision-Making, the Conversion of Concepts into Measurable Parameters, Understanding Data Analysis, Displaying Results and ultimately coming full-circle and Making the Link between Data and Planning. Given my occupation/work profile, this is noteworthy in that the associated improvements are not static, because I have become better equipped to share these lessons, through my interaction with tertiary-level students, who are aspired to actively engage and embrace critical thinking and analysis in the associated areas. In sum the course has improved my: work-professional, academic and social-community lives by way of equipping me an increased body of knowledge, understanding and respect for the significant role derived from having access to accurate and appropriate data, so as to improve the effectiveness of policy-making; The effects of which can prove highly beneficial to the society at-large. Most significant among the aforementioned, is the improvement the course has manifest in my academic life, because of the tangible, positive impact it has produced regarding my wherewithal and subsequent delivery of information to students who shall be among the future decision-makers of Belize.

Sobre el curso: The course allowed me to raise my level of awareness about Educational policies and practices outside of Jamaica. This heightened awareness has forced global thinking; and consideration in planning programmes for Jamaican children. I was also able to speak informatively when PISA was tabled for consideration in Jamaica.

Sobre el curso: I am now more aware of how policy is formulated and the tools available for long range and short term planning. If I were to be in a position to plan for the local authorities, I could, through this course, find ways to plan, execute and evaluate policies from data.

Sobre el curso: It is early in the month of November. My hands are full. I have to finish the development of a training module I am working on for caregivers of orphaned children- this must be completed soonest as the commencement of training is scheduled for January, 2018. At the same time, I have two research students working on their theses that I am guiding to finish their assignments. Despite those schedules, I decided to undertake this course- Data for Effective Policy Making. I have never regretted this decision. This course has improved my profession immensely. Briefly, I work as a private consultant in a firm called Zerof. One of my professional assignments is to conduct research for agencies and communities. Together with my colleagues, I have used this knowledge to develop an agricultural project in Region Six- we are working with over 2,000 farmers in the Berbice sub-region, Guyana to boost farming. This was largely informed by the information I obtained at the IDB open data portal. This data, plus the additional literature which was provided, showed that the food import bill for the Caribbean region was so high; this is despite the fact that Guyana has huge swaths of land and fresh water, which is not the case in other LAC. This course has improved my professional knowledge and interest in keeping data. As a result of this course, I learned and appreciated the importance of storing data for future usage. For example, according to the IDB, the bank has been collecting and storing data for over 50 years. Further, the IDB open data portal also showed that there were discrepancies in data provided on certain countries. Guyana was one of the countries with missing data. As a company, with the guidance of the IDB open data portal, we believe that we can also start to collect and store data on Guyana, especially in the area of agriculture, where we are focused. This data can be used to benefit future researchers. In the Caribbean Dashboard, the research by Heather Sutton which explored crime rates in the region and its costs to countries was so touching and inspiring at the same time. It was discovered that crime was high among the youth and one of the key contributing factors was unemployment and of course poor government policies. With this additional knowledge, I have embarked on a process of mobilising young people into groups with a view of training them into modern farming methods such as Climate Smart Agriculture. The analysis of variances (ANOVA) was so refreshing and currently, we are in the process of using this method to compare two farming communities we are working in. we believe that the results of this study will inform how we deal with either community.
