Sobre el curso:
I am an Independent Development Consultant, whose range of interests span an array of subject areas. Additionally, I serve as an Adjunct Lecturer at the University of Belize in the Faculty of Management & Social Sciences (FMSS), specifically in its undergraduate Public Sector Management programme. Independent Development Consulting is my primary occupation. Inevitably, my work opportunities, in this regard, are dependent on whether bids for consultancy projects prove successful. Hence, the course, Data for Effective Policy Making, has improved my work-professional life, via equipping me with salient tools and competencies that have improved my knowledge and appreciation for data and its significance to the need for effectiveness in the policy-making realm. This has led to my heightened awareness of prominent issues and thus increased my capabilities and level of proficiency in such regard. As for the impact of the course on my academic life, being an Adjunct Lecturer whose facilitation of courses include: Public Sector Management, Governance, Public Policy, Public Administration and Socio-Economic Development, I have endeavoured to incorporate the knowledge and information I gained, into my lectures, thus positively expanding the scope of my students’ learning experience. This has also assisted me to stay true to my conviction of always seeking to engender a learning environment that fosters a greater understanding of the need for improved, in-depth analysis. In relation to my social-community life, the course has sharpened my awareness and acumen of just how important data, its accuracy and accessibility is, concerning not only the policy-making element, but more significantly its impact on society and development, across the board.. The result lends to me being more attuned to the variety of dimensions that comprise, define and influence social issues; thus making me a more viable asset to my community. My enrolment and successful completion of the course has yielded positive improvements in the aforementioned areas of my life, both in terms of the conceptualisation and application of competencies pertaining to: Data and Decision-Making, the Conversion of Concepts into Measurable Parameters, Understanding Data Analysis, Displaying Results and ultimately coming full-circle and Making the Link between Data and Planning. Given my occupation/work profile, this is noteworthy in that the associated improvements are not static, because I have become better equipped to share these lessons, through my interaction with tertiary-level students, who are aspired to actively engage and embrace critical thinking and analysis in the associated areas. In sum the course has improved my: work-professional, academic and social-community lives by way of equipping me an increased body of knowledge, understanding and respect for the significant role derived from having access to accurate and appropriate data, so as to improve the effectiveness of policy-making; The effects of which can prove highly beneficial to the society at-large. Most significant among the aforementioned, is the improvement the course has manifest in my academic life, because of the tangible, positive impact it has produced regarding my wherewithal and subsequent delivery of information to students who shall be among the future decision-makers of Belize.
